If you have a reel mower, you need to sharpen the blades every couple of years, depending on how much you use it (just like with a power mower). If you used to have a power mower, you might be tempted to try to find someone to do it for you. Although I heard of someone in my area who *might* be able to do it, I decided to try this kit first.
The directions are straight-forward and clearly described in the manual. In short: turn the mower upside-down, use the brush to “paint” the compound (a thick goop) along the end of each blade, pop off a wheel, slip on the crank, and have your son turn it for a couple of minutes. (If you don’t have children, you’ll have to do it yourself.) Finally clean off the compound and re-assemble the mower. You should be able to complete this chore in 30-45 minutes. (The alternative is to pack it up, drive it to someone else, and come home; then later drive over, pick it up, and drive it home again. Oh yeah, and you’d have to pay for it too.)
The manual also describes how to adjust the blades for the optimal cut, which is something you need to do occasionally. I use strips of newspaper to ensure an even cut along the entire width of the reel.
I estimate there’s enough compound in this kit for about six or eight sharpenings, which means it could last up to ten years–quite a deal compared to paying someone else to do this simple chore–and you’ll have the satisifaction of knowing you did a great job.

The description of this product really should include a paragraph about how it actually works because the picture gives you absolutely no indication of what it does. The crank lets you turn the blades backwards and the “sharpening compound” which you “paint” on to the cutting edges of the blades turns the mower frame into a grinding stone. It really works well. But wait, there’s more… The instructions are excellent and they also tell you how to adjust the blades. Sending the mower out to a professional (if you can find one who works on reel mowers) will cost you about 75% of what you’ll pay for a new machine. This kit is worth it.A lot of the negative reviews about the reel mowers here on Amazon.com probably come from people who haven’t adjusted their machines correctly. My mower is working better than ever after making just a few simple adjustments.

There isn’t much to say about this product. It sharpens, and works well on my American lawn mower. However, the directions are flawed. If you READ THE MOWER MANUAL (not the manual in the sharpening kit), it will tell you to do the following:
1. Remove BOTH wheels
2. Remove and switch ratchet gears from L to R and vice versa
3. Flip over pawls
4. Apply Compound
5. PUSH MOWER BACKWARDS!!!!! (for about 5 minutes, or until sharpening goo changes color. Mine turns grey)
The instructions in the sharpening kit tell you to use the stupid crank, which takes forever. If you just push the mower backwards, the blades get sharpened in about 5 minutes. Then you just switch the ratchet gears back and re-flip-over the pawls (and put the wheels back on). My only complaint is that they didn’t SAY that. However, I give it 5 stars anyway, because if you use it how you SHOULD, it is very easy, and makes the cutting quality much better.

Go to your auto parts store and get some grinding compound for a fraction of the cost.
Also, for a much quicker sharpening session, remove both wheels, swap the gears so that the reel turns backwards, apply the compound, and walk the mower up and down the driveway. The backwards operation provides the backlapping to sharpen the reel and blade. Clean up the excess, and swap the gears back. Total time: less than 10 minutes.

My mower needed sharpening but the cost was prohibitive, I was told about $60. That was more than half the cost of the mower itself. I finally found this kit and after reading some reviews ordered it. The instructions were good (they include a section on adjusting the blades) and the whole thing took less than 15 minutes. Now it’s like I have a new mower, one pass and that’s all it takes.

I purchased this for my little yorkshire terrier to stay in when we all leave the house to go to work. Its wonderful. It is the perfect size and doesnt take up alot of room. My little dog likes to jump up and stand against the walls of this product and they dont fall or shake so it is very sturdy yet very light. It took me a minute to assemble the product and the little door makes it so great we leave it open and my little dog goes in and comes out when he wants. This is a great buy and cheap too.

This product is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I have a chihuahua who’s almost 11 years old, and has occasional accidents. Since having the carpeting replaced, and not wanting to put her into a claustrophobic kennel (just seemed wrong), I went for this product. It’s so roomy! and the design is feminine, sturdy, lightweight and open. The gate is so well made and very cute and useful.
For those of use who work and need to keep our pets in a controlled area when we can’t watch for accidents, this pet pen is a livesaver, and my dog absolutely loves it. There’s enough room for a small oil-filled heater, her large burrow bed and blankets, water bowl, bone-chewing/play area. Also, I sectioned off a small area for her potty pads, so she doesn’t have to “hold it” when I’m gone for longer periods of time. The pen is so roomy, that there’s plenty of distance between the potty pads, her bed, and water dish. You can also customizing the shape of the pen. It’s the greatest!
In terms of waterproofing, I lined the bottom with a shower curtain from the dollar store and topped with a queen-sized quilt. It’s soft and comfy and accident-proof! Even my cat sneaks in there to catch a few winks.
This is so much better than a kennel or keeping your pet in the bathroom while you’re away.

The Iris pen has stood the test of time, and has saved my dog from having to be in a confined, oppressive area while I’m away at work during the day. Today, I am purchasing another of these pens, which will serve as fencing around the patio of my small cottage. Can’t think of a more perfect weather resistant, durable, SAFE fence for my dog (and cat who can’t jump high distances) to play within outdoors. Two of these pens linked together will provide a rather large fenced area (over 12 feet).
Believe that from a distance, the fencing might appear as a picket fence. This will not only serve to keep the pets safe, but will look sharp and never dry rot or warp. Seriously, this is the most versatile, liberating pet product on the market. Can’t wait to see my pets coming and going through their own pet door into the fenced patio, and be outside whenever they please to catch the late morning/afternoon sun (when it’s out!). Will cover a portion of the fencing with some type of tarp for when it rains.
How cool is this product? Still say this is the best purchase I’ve ever made on Amazon, and I buy lots of stuff.

We have 2 full-size pugs that enjoy their new pen. At first I was skeptical if they would not lean on the sides and knock it over as Mini Me weighs 18 pounds and Lexi weighs approximately 12 pounds. They can stand up and lean on the sides with no problem. Currently, I have it in the kitchen so they can watch me cook and clean and it works out great. It is light enough to take down when not in use. I like their new pen because the top is open and I can reach down and pet them and give them their treats without having to open the door constantly. It is large enough that their large bed fits great in the pen with plenty of room also for their play toys. They can watch me work but yet are not under my feet while cleaning. I highly recommend this pen.

I have to keep my 70lb lab calm and still while she recovers from a knee injury, and this pen helps a lot. She sleeps in it (her bed goes inside) and hasn’t figured out how to escape. She’s never been an “escape artist”, but I think it would be pretty hard for her to get out because the sides are really tall. I disagree with the reviewer how said that the plastic is flimsy. It seems sturdy enough for me!

This is a really nice pen for puppies or older dogs. It is a great item to have when you do not want your furkid underfoot. I bought mine to put my pups that I am selling in when people come to look at them. It would be nice to find a bottom pan that would work for this especially when using it for pups that are not potty trained. I recommend this to anyone with furkids!
